Let's Meet for Coffee
A Leadership Series by Anshu Prabha
Episode 01 · The Recognition Trap | GRAMI Caffé · Malverne, NY
The snow is finally gone. At Grami Caffé in Malverne, the door is propped open for the first time since October. The Coach has already ordered an iced coffee before anyone can question her life choices. An almond croissant sits on the table between them.
Some decisions don't need explaining.
She picked the table by the window. Two chairs, both facing the glass. Equal warmth. Equal view. That's never an accident with her.
First-Year Manager: I do everything right. I recognize people. I give shoutouts in meetings. I tell them they're doing a great job. But something feels off. They seem — distant.
The Coach: Who did you recognize last week?
Manager: Blake. She crushed the quarterly report.
Coach: And the week before?
Manager: Blake again. She's just always delivering.
Coach: And before that?
Manager: I see where you're going.
Coach: Do you? Because this isn't about Blake. Blake deserves every bit of it. This is about what the rest of the room hears when Blake's name comes up again.
Manager: What do they hear?
Coach: That no matter how hard they work, the spotlight isn't meant for them.
Manager: So what do I do?
Coach: Start paying attention to what you haven't been seeing. Not the loudest contributions. The ones holding everything together quietly. The person who never misses a deadline. The one who steadies the team when things get tense. The one who makes Blake's success possible by doing ten things nobody notices.
They're there. You just haven't looked.
Manager: Same time next week?
Coach: Same time next week.
