Reid slid into the chair across from her like he had all the time in the world.
She knew that look. It meant he was finally exhaling.
The espresso martinis arrived without discussion. Hers was an indulgence. His was a ritual. That was the difference between them, and they both knew it.
THE COACH
So. You're moving on.
REID
Monday. New contract. Different city.
He picked up his glass.
Different dysfunction.
THE COACH
And this one?
REID
Done.
He said it simply. No drama.
Ready to put it behind me.
THE COACH
Tell me how it ended.

He was quiet for a moment.
Not the uncomfortable kind.
The kind that meant he was choosing his words the way he chose everything... carefully.
REID
Three weeks ago a senior executive on the project called me.
And she spent twenty minutes telling me exactly what I had been telling her for weeks.
He paused.
Like she'd just thought of it.
THE COACH
What did you do?
REID
I listened.
He picked up his glass.
Told her it sounded like a solid plan.
THE COACH
How did that feel?
REID
Like the right call.
THE COACH
That's not what I asked.

The corner of his mouth moved.
REID
Complicated.
It felt complicated.
She waited.

REID
There was a version of me that would have stopped her mid-sentence.
Would have wanted her to acknowledge that she was wrong and I had been right all along.
He paused.
For a long time I thought the job was getting people to recognize the value of what I was bringing.
THE COACH
What changed?
REID
It wasn't one thing. He set the glass down.
Just years of watching ego derail good work.
Other people's.
Sometimes my own.
And at some point you realize the goal was never to be acknowledged.
The goal was always to move the work forward.
THE COACH
So you let it go.
REID
I let it go.
He said it quietly.
Winning the argument and winning are not the same thing.
She let that sit for a moment.

THE COACH
What would you have done differently? From the beginning?
He looked up. That question landed somewhere he wasn't expecting.
REID
I would have spent less time explaining.
THE COACH
And more time?
REID
Understanding. I kept thinking the problem was the idea.
THE COACH
It wasn't?
He shook his head.
REID
No.
The idea wasn't the problem. The timing wasn't even the problem.
He ran his thumb along the rim.
I thought she could hear it. She couldn't. Not then.
I kept asking myself why she wasn't listening.
He smiled slightly.
Wrong question.
THE COACH
What's the right one?
REID
What's making this hard to hear?
The Coach nodded.
REID
I was so focused on being clear that I never got curious.
THE COACH
About?
REID
What she was carrying. The deadlines. The pressure. The politics. The fear. Whatever story she was telling herself that I couldn't see.
He shrugged.
REID
People don't hear ideas the way we think they do.
THE COACH
No?
REID
They hear them through trust.
Or the lack of it.
THE COACH
And now?
REID
Now she's calling people telling them to get on board.
He laughed softly.
REID
Nothing about the recommendation changed.
THE COACH
What changed?
This time the answer came quickly.
REID
I did.

Here's what I heard you describe.
You don't get a runway as a consultant. You're building trust and doing the work at the same time. The relationship and the deliverable are happening in parallel.
Misjudge what someone needs to feel before they can listen, and you're already behind before you've started.
Reid was quiet.
He nodded slowly.

REID
Different industry.
Smaller team.
People who apparently actually want to be helped.
THE COACH
Apparently.
REID
Apparently.
They both laughed.

Do you think you could make this one work now?
REID
Probably.
THE COACH
Then why leave?
A pause.
REID
Because proving I could wasn't the point.
REID
I learned how to navigate it. I learned how to build the trust. I learned how to get the work moving.
He turned the glass in his hand.
REID
But eventually I realized I was spending more energy managing the environment than doing the work.
That's when I knew.
THE COACH
Knew what?
REID
It stopped making sense to keep spending a dollar to earn a dime.

You stayed as long as the work made sense.
And when it stopped making sense you left.
That's not failure.
That's integrity.
He looked at her for a long moment.
He nodded once.
Picked up his glass.

He smiled.
